Memento Mori
The Life I live Now - Terrance Nelson, 2010
8 x 8 acrylic on canvas.
Adapted from an Owe Zerge memento mori, I interpreted his composition to suit my concept. I replaced the Franciscan habit with a pair of my blue jeans, used Zerge's skull and book of hours, and added my rosary. The quote from the poetry of John of the Cross reads: "The life I live now is no life at all".

The updated version is still sober and haunting. Very nice. Don't know how you put so much detail in things...like the facial expression and lace in the Cappa Magna painting...which is above my head.
Blue jeans?? I thought artists dressed all in black with tutleneck weaters.. :)

The jeans and the rosary were a nice touch!
You know, I've always been intrigued by the paintings of artists who take elements of other works and modify them to create their own work. It's similar to Caravaggio's "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas", which other artists have taken that piece and executed a more contemporary interpretation of it. There are more, needless to say.

Very immediate and sobering.
Beautiful!
Kinda nice, I would hang this one on my wall--it makes me think of St. Jerome--who kept a skull on his desk, to remind him of his death, always.
Tara - thanks - I think it's kind of Carmelite too - they liked skulls.
Monica - the lace in Cappa Magna is just squiggles of white paint.
Beautiful.
